Spending the better part of a day on this has finally yielded a functional Kinect + Surface Book. This is a narrative to better help MS.
Improper use of device manager may lead to system instability; proceed with care.
I'm using:
- Kinect for XBox One + Adapter
- SBP (i7 + dgpu) + Windows 10 Pro 1703 (Creators Update)
- Surface Dock <- Kinect plugged in here
In device manager, I noticed that the adapter is what _seemed_ to be causing the problem (though I can't be certain).
My steps were (prior to any Kinect software being installed):
- Plug in Kinect (continuous on-off white light on adapter + OS beep until failure)
- Unplug Adapter
- Install Kinect v2 SDK
- Replug (same result)
- Reboot
Unfortunately, the above repeats indefinitely.
In device manager, the Kinect was shown, but not active (despite being plugged in):
- In device manager tool bar -> View ->Show Hidden Devices
- Kinect Sensor Devices -> WDF Kinect Sensor xxx -> right click -> Update Driver <--Actually needed an update
This also did not yield a working Kinect (but felt like progress). After another reboot, back in device manager again (still showing hidden), I noticed a significant number of additional USB hubs + failed USB devices:
- Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers
- For every Usb hub (superspeed or otherwise) or composite device not actually in use:
- Right click + Uninstall device <-There were more than 20
At this point, I just plugged in adapter (I disconnected the Kinect USB cable from the adapter). Orange light.. but, it showed up in device manager. I right click + scan for hardware changes, and a warning was displayed on the adapter. At this point, the adapter was now the prime suspect.
I then began reloading all the drives for the 'active' usb hubs and composite devices:
- In device manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers
- For every usb hub + composite device:
- right click + update driver
- Browse my computer for driver software
- Let me pick from a list of available drivers
- Next, finish (e.g. just used what driver was already present)
At this point, one of the generic usb 3 super speed hubs caused device manager to hang, and then blue screen with a USB_POWERSTATE_FAILURE. After the reboot, I tried again, but this time no bluescreen.
I now had an adapter with no exclamation point after 'refresh'. I then unplugged the power to the adapter, plugged in the Kinect USB, then repowered the adapter. WHITE LIGHT!
And for the first time all day after some expected usb cycling, "Kinect: Decide what to do" notification. *gasp*
I then started the SDK Kinect Configuration Verifier, and it was actually working! Unfortunately the frame rate is terrible (7-15fps) so the depth camera is marginal at best, but it was actually working.
TLDR:
- Use device manager to uninstall all non-active USB hub + composite devices
- With only the adapter plugged in (no kinect sensor), use device manager to reload all usb hub and composite device drivers using the 'local' driver
- Remove all failed USB devices
- Reboot
- Update adapter driver until it works (only took 1 retry for me)
- Unplug adapter power, attach kinect sensor, re-power adapter
- Success?
Note that I did encounter bluescreens. Also note that I spent hours unwinding this and am not exactly sure what caused it to start working (YMMV). I did confirm multiple times that it is still working.
