This worked for me using the Surface Book but I had to connect the Kinect through a USB hub. The one I used was
Kinect v2 does not work with Surface Book with latest Windows 10 version1607
Hi,
Until recently I had no issues in using Kinect v2 on my Surface Book computer. Suddenly, after last week Windows and Surface Book firmware updates Kinect is not recognized anymore.
My configuration: Surface Book, i5/256
Kinect connected on the USB3 port of Surface Book
Powered either directly or via docking station
Kinect service set to use Nvidia card
Once I connect the USB cable the following happens:
- Kinect led (from the Kinect adapter) is either orange (as no connection) or flashing white
- After a few seconds, I get the following message popping up on the screen (message in the bottom right of the screen): "USB Device is not recognized...", followed up by the typical and infinitely repeating USB out sound
- In Device Manager I can see under the Universal Serial Bus controllers: Unknown USB Device (Set Address Failed)
- When I installed it first time the device was visible in the Devices, device Manager, etc. But was not starting the Kinect. After restart device was just not recognized.
What did I try?
- from removing devices, disable, etc...
- to reinstalling completely my Surface Book (yes... a few hours of work)
- tested Kinect on a desktop PC - works OK
- tested on a Surface3 even there works ok (I don't think that Surface3 has a USB 3 port... but, it works!)
- used Kinect verifier, which as always is listing that USB device is unknown (but this is not new since I had it in the past too)
Any idea? I believe it has to do with latest Windows 10 updates, drivers and latest Surface Book update too. Thank you!
Kind regards,
Gia

2017-06-22T07:47:50+00:00 Thanks for taking the time to test it out Mick.
Its unfortunate that you confirmed what the rest of us have been experiencing, even with a fresh machine.
Also unfortunate that our friends from Microsoft here on the forum have gone quiet.

2017-06-19T16:36:01+00:00 Hey all,
So the replacement Surface Book arrived today. Connected it to the internet, let it do whatever it wanted to do and that's it. It's Windows 10 Pro, version 10.0.14393 Build 14393. Didn't install anything else whatsoever, and went to try the Kinect with the Kinect for Windows Hub. Here's what happened:
- Powered up the Kinect for Windows Hub, got a solid orange light. Connected it to the USB port closer to the screen of the Surface Book. Kinect Hub light starts to blink white, nothing appears on the Surface screen, however expanding the taskbar icons, I can see the Remove Hardware icon constantly appearing and disappearing, suggesting the system knows something has been plugged in, but doesn't know what to do next. This just repeats until I disconnect the USB.
- Disconnected the USB from the Surface Book and reconnected it. Different pattern this time, the light on the Kinect Hub stays orange, and almost immediately get a 'USB device not recognized' dialogue. Close this and the appearing and disappearing Remove Hardware icon keeps going in the background.
- Installed Kinect for Windows SDK v2.0 and repeated steps one and two above, got the exact same result.
In the SDK Configuration Verifier I get an error on USB Controller:
Result: Unknown USB 3.0 port detected. Your USB configuration may support Kinect for Windows.
So I can confirm a brand new Surface Book direct from Microsoft does not work with Kinect for Windows.
Have video of all of the above if it helps.
Thanks,
- Mick
