Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

I'm wondering, why we agree for such treatment by microsoft? why we have to find solution, buy extra charger ect instead pushing microsot to solve the issue?

may I ask if you get "new" one or just "refirbished"? Has the new/refirbished the same issue or so far so good?

volkerschriefer, I contacted Microsoft and they sent a replacement, which was really easy, quick and painless.

I was sent a new machine and had to return my old one within 10 days using a returns label they provided. I wouldn't wait, just get a return.

I messed around for a couple of months trying all the suggestions people offered and wish I hadn't. Just send it back and get a new one.

I escalated this through Better Business Bureau and the support specialist Aaron had this to say about it after I shared this thread with him:

"I skimmed the thread, but there isn’t anything that I can do with it.  We aren’t involved in the process for bug fixes, there aren’t large numbers of this fault being reported even on the thread, and there is no current projects regarding this we’ve seen any notices for.  You’ve provided one thread and when doing a general search found one more.  A number of entries have already reported fixes and workarounds.  This has not been determined to be a general issue or related to a large number of reported faults.

Unless that changes, we are handling these as any standard service request on a case-by-case basis."

So the short answer is no... no one is fixing this and Microsoft doesn't think there is a problem.
