Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

    I have the same issue on my surface laptop studio - after two months of usage (i7, 32 MB of RAM, top notch). The LED is on if I plug the standard microsoft surface charger (which came with the device). However, it is not charging and the battery icon is also not showing as charging.

    Only a USB-C charger will charge - as stated by other users. I bought a cheap 96 Watt USB-C PD charger which is actually intended for MacBooks - ironic, is it not?

    Unnecessary to say how absolutely infuriating this is for a device which cost me 2,500 euros!

    I read here that installing new drivers, formatting, recovering the system etc. won't fix the problem. Any hints what would work?

    Is Microsoft working on this?

    Hard to imagine I would ever buy a MS device again....

    I had chatted with the support for the same - send a new device then send the old back - but i hope it will be fixed soon, as I try hard to push Microsoft from my knowledge and testing.

    Im not so "lucky" as all you, as i seen this only a few times - but its still not okay for a type of this machine.

    I got en email from i guy i chatted with some time ago, and he promised me that he would return to me - I got this:
    "Dear Michael

    I hope this email finds you well

    I just wanted to inform you that I just received feedback from the designated department, and unfortunately, there is nothing new :(

    the issue is recognized by Microsoft and they are still investigating the issue to make a fix in the next updates, so how long this will take? we don't know.

    The only temporary solution they are providing is to try to force a shutdown by pressing and holding down the power button until Surface shuts down and restarts, continue to hold down the power button until you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button."

    Created a feedback in the feedback hub after chat with a nice support agent (had been that multiple times regarding this) and I will have you all to comment here, as this way there can come more attention to this to.

    I replaced the machine, this service was excellent from Microsoft. I was sent a new machine and a return slip for UPS to return my old one.

    With a new machine setup I restored my old machine with a clean install and checked the charger - it still didn't charge.

    I think this thread is a mix of three different problems

    1. The PC not charging because of software / driver issues
    2. The PC discharging quickly
    3. Hardware faults with the charging port blown

    Whereas some people have sorted issues 1&2 by deleting the battery driver or hard restarting or using a USB-C charger, my issue was the Microsoft charging port was completely dead and it was only fixed by replacing the machine.

    My unit is still under warranty until April 2023 so I have time to see if it happens again. Fingers crossed it will be okay, but I will post again if it happens again.
