Surface Pro microSD card unmounts after waking up from sleep

Hi,

I've recently bought Surface Pro along with a 64 GB sd card. I've noticed that after a long sleep period, the SD card unmounts itself and I can no longer find it under explorer. I need to remove and reinsert it before Windows detects the card again. This doesn't happen if I wake up the device shortly after putting it to sleep, only after a few hours. I wouldn't mind it as much if I didn't have to set up Skydrive again after reinserting. I think it might have something to do with s3 sleep, and might be a driver/software error, but I'm not entirely sure. Any ideas?

I finally solved this problem by enabled write-caching for the SD card.  My card no longer unmounts unexpectedly when changing power modes.  I realize this comes with some risk of possible data loss if the card is not ejected properly.

  1. I right-clicked on the SD card device in device manager under Disk Drives.
  2. Then clicked properties
  3. Then went to the policies tab
  4. And then selected "best performance"

So far, no unexpected dismounts and no data corruption.  This has also improved the performance of the device as reads and writes of large files seem to be much smoother now.

My theory is that this setting is preventing the slot from powering down while in a hibernated or suspended state.

Eventually I changed the card same make/ model, formatted it as NTFS and so far have had no issues at all...........and its been almost 2 months now.

I think Scandisk have issues with quality control ?

Try a full format on NTFS , it does take sometime

If it still has issues after that I would use the card in your phone or something else and by another one brand new for the slate.

It worked for me.

I guess we will get the same issues when the 128GB MSD card comes out!

Simply change the driver to generic USB mass storage.

    I will first try using Surface 2 with Type Cover 2 attached but sleep/wake by using power button

    then without Type Cover 2 attached

    and then segue into the next step - maybe the tape method.

    I will report the result.

    After days of test I found the behavior of the "SD Card eject or re-mount" issue - The computer loses the card while it is sleeping which can be verified through events in system log that is of category "Source Security-SPP, Event ID 1040" which is related to hardware change induced Windows(R) copyright verification.

    If the computer wakes immediately the event takes place, the SD Card would be lost. On the other hand, if the computer wakes minutes or longer after the event takes place, the card would get re-mouted. Every time the card is lost, a scanning for hardware change alaways brings it back without having to reinstate the card mechanically.

    Based on the phenomenons, a speculation arises that the loss of the SD Card is rendered by vibration or electric fluctuation which seems to be aroused by touching the computer or moving it especially with the Type Cover attached. If M$ is to lower the threshold in its SD Card availability detection procedure, I think, this pestering issue would go away.

    Hello!

    Here is a result for everyone to try.   I have been so sick of this issue with the random un-mounting that I got feed-up and put the microSD card in a USB card reader, wow - works fine now.  All those cards I had bought now all work fine no matter what format.  Even from sleep!  This includes 16, 32 and 64GB sandisk extreme PLUS and ultra cards.  I have tried 2 different card readers via USB with no more issues.

    Before this I have read the forums and put tape on, changed USB and card settings, restored the tablet, did updates and it simply seemed to work better in general with smaller cards than bigger cards.   My best result by far was FAT32 on a 32GB Sandisk extreme plus card. with write back turned-on.

    I will contact Microsoft about this.  If the rest of you have a chance, try this out.  I know it's a pain with the USB port, but it might be the quick and dirty method to find out if you have a card reader issue on the surface or a SD card issue.  I used the Kingston Mobile light card reader which allows you to change the drive letters which I know is important for some people.
