Surface pro 4 display adapter error, "Display adapter igfx stopped responding and has recovered", event id 4101. Seems to be only when running Edge.
What date is on the current driver??

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.
We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.
To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

I suspect devices racing to awaken are interfering with each other. Leaving WiFi on during sleep (settings > system>power & sleep), which I set yesterday, seems to have fixed the black screen on "awakening" problem I have been having on my surface pro 4. (Of course sleep, under the balanced power scheme, consumed up to 23% of battery capacity this way).
WiFi set off during sleep used to reconnect after sign-in and startup. Updates installed in January changed this so that it was on by that time.
Since I've still gotten the MTConfig errors sometimes and also distributed COM errors and warnings on Kernel-PnP: WUDFRd failing to load for device ... and ACPI: EC returned data when none was requested, that were also being reported in the 'System' event log, inelegance remains. However, my screen isn't black and I don't have to force shutdown and reboot to wake the Surface.

Try a two button reset
Step 1: Swipe in from the right and tap or click Settings, tap or click Power, and then tap or click Shut down to shut down Surface. If you can’t shut down Surface normally, press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds.
Step 2: After Surface turns off, press and hold volume-up button and the power button on your Surface at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.
The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.
Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.
Step 4: Press and release the power button again to turn your Surface back on.
if this does not work, you will need to exchange it.
I would recommend exchanging your Surface Pro 4.
I purchased one the beginning of the month from Best Buy and it had problems waking up, crashes, the keyboard would not connect, etc. After 3 hrs on the phone with Microsoft tech support and 13 days I took it back to Best Buy and exchanged it. I've had the new one since Monday this week (11/16/15) and have not had any issues with it (except display driver crash).
Before taking the other one back I thought that the Surface Pro 4 was not ready for prime time and figured that I would just need to get an Apple MacBook Air but since getting this one I can say that thus far I am very happy with the purchase. It is much more versatile than the iPad due to software compatibility. It's not as easy to use as the iPad when the Surface is in tablet mode but the applications are not dumbed down (like on the iPad) and I can load and use any application I need.
It runs games well too! Currently I have BioShock Infinity and Borderlands up and running, using an Xbox one wireless controller with the Microsoft USB Wireless Adapter.
The pencil works well too. I've used a pencil on the iPad with software designed for it and even when I get a pencil that has a point that is small enough to see where I'm writing, the palm rejection software is not accurate. This means that when I take notes and rest my palm on the screen, I get marks or the device responds like I'm writing with my palm. I have not had a single problem with the Surface Pro 4 and the included pencil.
I love my Apple products but in my current situation, I need the screen size, compactness, battery life (I run 6-7 hours of typing and surfing on a charge) and full software capabilities of the Surface Pro 4.
The recent updates have NOT fixed the display driver crashes for me...I mostly use the Edge browser. They are VERY frequent. I'm about ready to take both my Surface Pro 4's back! So frustrating. And, I often get a black screen when booting up. Holding down the power button for 30 seconds works, but I'm not willing to do that on a regular basis.
MS is about to have a major problem on their hands if they don't get this fixed.
