Surface pro 4 display adapter error, "Display adapter igfx stopped responding and has recovered", event id 4101. Seems to be only when running Edge.
What date is on the current driver??

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.
We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.
To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

I suspect devices racing to awaken are interfering with each other. Leaving WiFi on during sleep (settings > system>power & sleep), which I set yesterday, seems to have fixed the black screen on "awakening" problem I have been having on my surface pro 4. (Of course sleep, under the balanced power scheme, consumed up to 23% of battery capacity this way).
WiFi set off during sleep used to reconnect after sign-in and startup. Updates installed in January changed this so that it was on by that time.
Since I've still gotten the MTConfig errors sometimes and also distributed COM errors and warnings on Kernel-PnP: WUDFRd failing to load for device ... and ACPI: EC returned data when none was requested, that were also being reported in the 'System' event log, inelegance remains. However, my screen isn't black and I don't have to force shutdown and reboot to wake the Surface.

Try a two button reset
Step 1: Swipe in from the right and tap or click Settings, tap or click Power, and then tap or click Shut down to shut down Surface. If you can’t shut down Surface normally, press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds.
Step 2: After Surface turns off, press and hold volume-up button and the power button on your Surface at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.
The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.
Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.
Step 4: Press and release the power button again to turn your Surface back on.
if this does not work, you will need to exchange it.
That would be great, but I don't see it happening. It would deter others from buying the device, and they certainly don't want that.
Yes, that was the sound that I keep hearing! I thought I was only one experiencing that problem.
So far on my second SP4, the touch screen works and everything *knock on wood* works fine. I still get display driver crashes but it's not all the time so I'm not even going to complain.
I'm hoping that this SP4 lasts me for a good while and continues to improve over time with the fixes and updates. Albeit, it's a bit slow when opening multiple files - I have the SP4 i5 4GB RAM, 128 GB, after asking one of the store rep. which one to get. They had recommended the base model, saying it's powerful enough to open up multiple files without a hitch. Yeah right, I'm happy that I stuck to my gut and chose the i5 core with 4GB RAM. I initially wanted the 8GB RAM but figured it might be overboard for simply using Office 2016 and internet.
That being said, I was a bit shocked with how the fan would start up after opening couple PowerPoints side by side and just how inferior 4GB RAM is, I'd find myself impatiently tapping the screen, waiting for files to boot and open. Then again, I'm used to my MacBook Pro Retina's 16GB RAM so I should have seen it coming. I still don't understand how Microsoft dubs the Surface Pro line the 'laptop killer'...'netbook killer/low-tier laptop killer' seems more appropriate.
After reading all the comments, I was seriously considering refunding my second SP4. But after spending some more time with my SP4, I'm just going to embrace it, with it's flaws and all and just hope that Microsoft will fix this. I really hope so because I recently learned that my aunt had gotten a Surface Pro 3 as a birthday gift but returned it promptly because she found it difficult to use. While I agree that it does take a lot of accommodating to use - especially if they're used to Windows XP or Mac OSX, I have grown really fond of Windows 10 and its layout.
It's a great device and has promising potential, so it's a real shame that Microsoft wants to compromise quantity over quality.
