Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

Thanks,

Josh

Hi

I suspect devices racing to awaken are interfering with each other. Leaving WiFi on during sleep (settings > system>power & sleep), which I set yesterday,  seems to have fixed the black screen on "awakening" problem I have been having on my surface pro 4. (Of course sleep, under the balanced power scheme, consumed up to 23% of battery capacity this way).

WiFi set off during sleep used to reconnect after sign-in and startup. Updates installed in January changed this so that it was on by that time.

Since I've still gotten the MTConfig errors sometimes and also distributed COM errors and warnings on Kernel-PnP: WUDFRd failing to load for device ... and ACPI: EC returned data when none was requested, that were also being reported in the 'System' event log, inelegance remains. However, my screen isn't black and I don't have to force shutdown and reboot to wake the Surface.

Hope this helps

K

Try a two button reset

Step 1: Swipe in from the right and tap or click Settings, tap or click Power, and then tap or click Shut down to shut down Surface. If you can’t shut down Surface normally, press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds.

Step 2: After Surface turns off, press and hold volume-up button and the power button on your Surface at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.

Step 4: Press and release the power button again to turn your Surface back on.

if this does not work, you will need to exchange it.

Totally agree. I am not an Apple Fanboi but for various reasons have had Apple devices over the past 6 years (presently two iPads, a Mac Mini, a MacBook Pro and, and 3 iPods running 24 hours a day for 5 years), with exactly ZERO hardware or software reliability issues. I use a Nokia 930 phone. Never had a problem with it, but need a larger screen and was hoping to replace it with a 950XL. I can't stand the thought of going to iPhone, but now am forced to reconsider, given the way the Surface (and the "new" Microsoft) are working out. I am almost certain of one thing - the Lumia phones and Windows 10 Mobile have been rushed out (if you can call 16 months overdue a "rush") before they are really ready, because heads would roll if they missed the Holiday season. I'll hold off to watch the message boards on those before purchasing.  As for the Surface - this thing is a lemon. The thing crashed while I as writing this (I minimized Edge to do something else, and then the Taskbar refused to come back from Auto-Hide, and is still unrecoverable. I managed to get this window back with a 3 finger swipe up. Just ridiculous). Eventually Surface/WIndows 10 will get fixed, but man, using this thing is painful right now.

I agree. All manufacturers experience issues. However, I don't think that is an excuse for delivering low quality products and not doing anything about it, or not admitting it!

    **Rant Warning**

You mentioned Apple and Microsoft in regards to quality of their products. I share my own experience.  Clearly it is not a scientific survey but for me, there is enough evidence that Microsoft is not doing a good job compared to Apple. Please note, I am not an Apple fanboy. I worked for Microsoft for a few years. I loved (and still love) the company. I am hoping to see the day Microsoft gets quality and customer satisfaction right. Sorry... I went off topic - back to the comparison, here is a list of Microsoft and Apple devices I have owned in the last 7 years:

    Microsoft devices:

    • Xbox 360 - replaced after 8 months because of RROD
    • Surface RT - Had to be replaced twice, issues included not waking up from sleep, not charging, not starting up. The last replacement worked but the battery completely died after a couple of years
    • Surface Pro 3: Wifi very unreliable, OneNote kept crashing when using pen, hard reset, multiple OS re-installs, trying another pen, none of them fixed all of the problems, Eventually died after 10 months as the refused to charge. Replaced the device, worked for another 5 months and this time the power adapter is playing up.
    • Surface Pro 4: Not waking up from sleep, Windows Hello not working (not detecting or detecting and not doing anything) so had to turn that off. Screen flickers on low brightness. Sometimes I have to press the power button twice to turn it on. Graphics driver crashes multiple times a day. There is excessive backlight bleed at the bottom of the page. Microsoft replaced the device, I explicitly asked them to check the replacement unit before sending, and guess what? It suffers from exact same problems (some are software related but some are hardware issues).
    • Nokia Lumia 7, 920 and 930: Well I know this was not Microsoft until recently but still, it was the representative of Microsoft platform. I have had issues with pretty much all of the handsets I have owned, most of which were hardware related.

    Apple devices:

    • iPad 2
    • iPad mini 2
    • iPad mini 3
    • MacBook Pro (2014)
    • iPhone 6

I never had to return any of the Apple devices, they all work fine. Yes I have had issues with some OS upgrades (as an early adopter), however, Apple are quite quick at issuing updates that actually fix the problem.

One more point, Microsoft has to improve the quality of customer service. If you are in the US and close to a Microsoft store, you can at least take the device to the store and talk to somebody. In the UK, we have to deal with the store support team, and so far they have delivered a bad customer service when dealing with my requests. They have promised to do something but failed to keep it. They pass you from one team to another and back to the first one. The Microsoft Store web site needs to be fixed also. They have issued an invoice that doesn't match the order. Both billing and shipping addresses are wrong and the support teams don't know where those addresses come from and how to fix it. This is eCommerce 101 and I can't believe Microsoft Store can't get it right.
