Surface Pro 4 Bulging Battery / Screen. 3 1/2 years old.

So, like many others on this forum, we have a Surface Pro 4, in which the battery has decided to self-destruct, destroying a £1,700 machine.

The screen hasn't popped off, but the battery has swollen enough to prevent the hinge from opening as it should and for the glass on the front to be very distorted, and it registers random screen input, all the while running hotter than the central heating.

I've spoken to support. They unhelpfully told me that because my warranty is up, I would have to pay several hundred pounds (£333) to replace the machine with a refurbished unit. To me, this is completely unacceptable. These devices are clearly flawed by design. This issue is too wide spread for it to be a coincidence. The batteries used in these devices are obviously flawed, and when I suggested as such, Sean L, the person dealing with my case, stopped responding (A few days after that, I wrote to Microsoft's twitter support who confirmed that the case had been closed. Thanks Sean L.)

If the device is dangerous (as suggested by the agent who I spoke to on the phone in the first instance) and it does catch fire while we are away this summer, and it subsequently burns down a multi-million pound Cambridge University building? What then, Microsoft? You'll wish you'd just replaced it then, won't you.

    Hello,

    So are we really not given any replacement option. My surface pro was a gift and sat on shelf for a couple years just using a few times to play with the pen technology, Then I finally started using the surface pro 4 last year during pandemic a lot and then within a few months the battery bulged out and screen started bending. I continue to use it because its the only computer we have left and funds are super tight right now. So I just upgraded renter insurance in case there is any fire caused by the unit.

    Does anyone know how to get Microsoft to replace this?

    I think they should be forced to recall this hardware like a car manufacturer. I'm interested in starting the class action lawsuit if this doesn't get solved because there appear to be thousands of units impacted by this, costing us consumers millions of dollars.

    Please let me know how to get this fixed by Microsoft and whatever you do - NEVER BUY MICROSOFT HARDWARE AGAIN. GARBAGE!

    I'll join the club, Surface Pro 4, just over 5 years old. Yellow streak down screen and bulge so the smart keyboard doesn't shut properly.

    Contacted Microsoft Support and after some back and forth with emails I got this response.

    "Unfortunately, you should stop using the device also there is no repair options for it. I know this is not the answer you were looking for, however, regarding this matter we cannot provide you with any help."

    A virtual door in the face!

    I was in the same situation, battery expanded until the front screen popped of on my surface pro 4..... I ended up purchasing a genuine replacement battery for $75cdn online and had a local cellphone repair shop replace the battery for me for $40cdn...that might be your best option, mine has been working now for almost two years since replacing the battery and also changing the ability to limit the battery charging to only 50% because if the unit is constantly plugged into and outlet like mine usually is causes over charging and overheating the battery which I believe is the reason for the battery expanding... after this unit goes caput, I'll never buy another Microsoft product though, horrible customer service for a clearly factory defective issue which should have been resolved.......hope this helps..

    I, too, filed a CSPC report regarding my Surface 4, and Microsoft didn't even bother sending me an F-U email.  Not to get political here (it's not the place), but there are times that the government NEEDS to step in and order a recall when a company walks away from its basic responsibility to provide a safe product.  We're not talking about a battery losing its ability to hold a charge, this is a device that can catch fire.  What if that happens on an airplane?  It's just disgusting.
