on my personal win 11 pro laptop, I have a user acct but I can't access the admin account. Did I miss something on the setup? How can I make an admin acct to add printers, scanners etc?

    Hi,

Regarding the Q&A assistance process: do you have administrator access but are unable to add the printer or scanner?

    What error are you getting?

If possible, could you provide the printer or scanner model?

    Thanks.

On a personal Windows 11 Pro device, the account created during initial setup is typically the administrator account. To check whether the current account already has admin rights:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info.
    2. Under the account name, look for Administrator.

If Administrator appears there, that account already has the rights needed to add printers, scanners, and install software.

If it does not show Administrator, Windows does not allow a standard user to grant itself administrator rights or reset an existing administrator password.

    Supported options are:

    1. Sign in with an account that already has administrative rights, if one exists on the laptop.
    2. If no accessible admin account exists, use Reset this PC from Windows Recovery to reinstall Windows and create a fresh administrator account during setup.

Important: resetting the PC can affect installed apps and data. Back up important files first.

If files appear to be missing after setup or upgrade, they can sometimes be in a disabled built-in Administrator account. In that case:

    1. In the search box, type computer management and open Computer Management.
    2. Select Local Users and Groups > Users.
    3. If Administrator has a down arrow on its icon, open Properties.
    4. Clear Account is disabled, then select Apply.
    5. Sign out and sign in again using the Administrator account.

For User Account Control behavior, the setting is in Control Panel > System and Security > Change User Account Control settings. This changes prompts for admin-level actions, but it does not turn a standard account into an administrator account.
