Hi,

I want to have access to my Azure account, but I accidentally removed the MFA from Microsoft Authenticator.

I cannot login anymore. Could you help me get some kind of restore code in my email inbox?

Regards,

Luuk

    Hi @Luuk Oosterhuis,

As this is a user-to-user support forum, neither I nor other community members have access to Microsoft's internal systems or the ability to perform account recovery actions on your behalf. However, I hope the information below helps guide you toward the most appropriate path to regain access to your account.

1/If you are an end user

Please contact your organization's IT help desk or Microsoft 365/Microsoft Entra administrator and ask them to reset your authentication methods or require MFA re-registration, following the guidance here: Manage user authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication

This process only takes a few minutes. It will clear out your previous sign-in sessions, and the next time you sign in, you’ll be prompted to set up MFA again from scratch on your phone. That usually resolves the issue and allows the Authenticator app to start generating codes normally again.

    2/If you are an administrator

If there is another administrator in the tenant, ask that administrator to reset your authentication methods or require MFA re-registration for your account.

If you are the only administrator in the tenant, there is unfortunately no self-service recovery option for this scenario. You will need to contact Microsoft Support by phone and request assistance with administrator account: Contact Microsoft customer support

In situations like this, Microsoft's Data Protection Team (DPT) has processes and verification procedures that may help restore administrative access after confirming ownership and identity.

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare:

    • What kind of problem are you experiencing?
    • Answer: Authenticator
    • What products do you use?
    • Answer: Office 365 for business
    • Is this for an education or company account?
    • Answer: For companies
    • Are you an administrator?
    • Answer: Yes
    • Are there any other administrators in your organization?
    • Answer: No. I am the only admin in my tenant
    • Do you need a... Service request?
    • Answer: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

During the phone call, you will need to provide the information you have received through your subscription, such as: Your company name, billing information, phone number, alternate email address, etc. Therefore, our privacy team can help you reset your multi-factor authentication, and after the reset, you can add your account back to your authenticator app on your phone and set it up from scratch or choose a different authentication method to log in to your account.

I hope this helps point you toward the appropriate recovery path, and I wish you the best of luck getting access restored.
