Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
For a personal Microsoft account, if the sign-in code is still going to an old phone number, use one of these supported paths:
- On the sign-in screen, select Use a different verification method if it appears.
- This shows any other verification methods already on the account, such as a recovery email, Microsoft Authenticator, or passkey.
- If no working method is available, select I don’t have any of these.
- This starts the account recovery flow and can let new security info be added.
- If still signed in on another device, update the account security methods there:
- Go to the Microsoft account Security page.
- Select Manage how I sign in.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Add another available method such as a recovery email, Microsoft Authenticator, or a passkey.
- The option to add a new phone number may not be available for personal Microsoft accounts.
- If prompted to verify security info during sign-in, that prompt can be skipped for 24 hours at a time, but after seven days verification or new security info is required before sign-in can continue.
- If verification codes are not arriving:
- Check whether the code is being sent to the correct email or phone.
- Check the junk folder for messages from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
- Avoid making repeated code requests, because unusual activity can temporarily block code delivery.
- VOIP numbers cannot be used for verification codes.
- If the old number cannot be accessed at all, another verification method or the recovery process is required. Support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details.
If the account is recovered, keep multiple sign-in methods on the account so access does not depend on a single phone number.
