Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Use the official recovery path immediately:
- Start with the sign-in helper. It asks for the account email or phone number and then either gives the correct self-help steps or offers the option to talk to an agent.
- If the PC used for that account may be compromised, run a full malware scan before changing the password:
- Open Windows Security
- Go to Virus and threat protection
- Select Scan options > Full scan > Scan now
- If access is restored, change or reset the password right away and use a strong password.
- After recovery, check account settings that are commonly changed after a compromise:
- Connected accounts
- Forwarding
- Automatic replies
For the unknown verification destination shown during sign-in, if the listed verification email or phone options are not recognized and two-step verification was not turned on, use the Sign-in Helper tool.
If two-step verification was turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support cannot reset the account or change account details.
Support agents also cannot send password reset links or access and change account details. If the automated recovery process is unsuccessful, there is no separate manual recovery path in the provided guidance.
