Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Use the Microsoft Sign-in Helper first. It is the primary recovery path for a hacked Outlook.com or Microsoft account and can either guide through self-help steps or offer the chance to talk to an agent.
Recommended recovery sequence:
- Start the hacked account recovery flow
Open Start from the hacked account article and enter the affected email address or phone number. - Scan the PC for malware before changing anything
In Windows Security:- Open Virus and threat protection
- Select Scan options > Full scan > Scan now
- Change or reset the password
After the malware scan, sign in and change the password. If sign-in no longer works, use the password reset option. - Check account settings after access is restored
Review these areas because a hijacker may have changed them:- connected accounts
- forwarding
- automatic replies
- If the account is blocked because of unusual sign-in activity
Use the Sign-in Helper from the Outlook.com unblock article. - If normal recovery does not work
Use Help with the Microsoft account recovery form. - If more assistance is needed
Use I need to talk to a customer support agent.
Also review recent sign-in activity on the recent activity page to check when and where the account was accessed.
