Try these recovery paths in order:
- Open the file from inside Word instead of from the recent link.
- In Word, select File > Open > Browse.
- Go to the file location and select the document.
- Select the arrow next to Open and choose Open and Repair.
- This can recover a damaged Word file.
- If the file is stored in OneDrive, check whether OneDrive storage is full.
- If OneDrive is full, the document may open read-only and changes cannot be saved until storage is under the limit.
- Check available space from the OneDrive icon in the notification area and choose Manage storage, or sign in to OneDrive on the web and review used space.
- If Word reports the file type is blocked or the file still will not open, try recovery from the Open dialog.
- In Word, select File > Open.
- Select the file once.
- In the Open dropdown, choose Recover Text, then select Open.
- If it opens, save it as Word Document (.docx).
- Formatting may change during this process.
- Install the latest Office updates.
- In any Office app, on the Help menu, select Check for Updates.
- Turn on Automatically keep Microsoft aps up to date.
- Select Update and install all available updates.
- Then try opening the document again.
- If the problem is with a SharePoint or OneDrive-based open path, try opening the document from the web location directly or download a copy to the local drive and open that copy in desktop Word.
- If the file may be corrupted and none of the above works, look for another version from backup or AutoRecover/AutoSave history if those were enabled.
- Open a document after a file corruption error
- Why did my file open read-only?
- Error: [Filename] uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version
- My Word document is now Read-Only and won't allow me to edit anymore (desktop version not app) - Microsoft Q&A
- Can't open Office files from SharePoint Online
