URGENT: Custom domain release from inaccessible Microsoft 365 tenant

I need Microsoft Data Protection Team assistance.

Old inaccessible tenant: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed].onmicrosoft.com

Domain that must be released: mbo-horssen.nl

We are the legal owner of mbo-horssen.nl and have full control of its DNS.

Microsoft has already verified ownership of the domain through DNS.

The domain is still attached to the old tenant [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed].onmicrosoft.com, but we no longer have Global Administrator access to that tenant.

Our current Microsoft 365 provider, Hostnet, has confirmed that they do not manage or have access to the old tenant and cannot release the domain.

Microsoft telephone support keeps routing us through an automated system and we are unable to reach an agent.

REQUEST:

Please have a Microsoft moderator escalate this case to the Data Protection Team / Tenant Recovery Team for a forced custom domain release.

We can provide privately:

  • Active contact email
  • Telephone number
  • Country and timezone
  • Tenant details
  • DNS TXT verification
  • Domain ownership documentation

Please contact me privately for the required information.

    Hi Dennis De Grundt,

In this situation, the domain cannot be released until ownership has been formally verified. The recommended next step is to work directly with Microsoft’s Data Protection Team, as they handle domain ownership verification and tenant recovery requests. Once they review the evidence you provide and confirm that you own the domain, they can assist with removing the domain from the previous tenant so that it can be verified and used in your new Microsoft 365 tenant.

If you are unable to access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, I recommend contacting Microsoft Support directly. You can find the relevant phone numbers here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support  and select Work account.

During the call, you may need to provide information associated with your subscription, such as your company name, billing details, phone number, and an alternate email address. This information allows the Data Protection team to verify your identity and securely assist with regaining access to your administrator account.

In some regions, the initial support interaction may be automated. The following is a general example of how the conversation may proceed:

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you reach out the Microsoft Data Protection team support more effectively:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

In some countries, it is an automated conversation like:

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

    You: Authenticator.

IVR: What kind of product do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

IVR confirmation: education or company account?

    You: For companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Do you have another administrator in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

You: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me directly to the Data Protection Team.

I also recommend calling during business hours. In my experience, reaching the correct support queue can sometimes be difficult, and automated systems may not always work as expected. If you cannot get through on the first attempt, trying again later or at a different time may help.

If you are unable to reach a live support agent through the existing tenant, another option is to create a temporary Microsoft 365 trial tenant. This can provide access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, allowing you to open a support request and explain that assistance is needed to recover access to a different tenant.

To create a temporary tenant, visit: Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365. You can then create a new tenant by following the provided prompts.

Once the temporary tenant has been set up, you can access its admin center and submit a support ticket requesting assistance from the Data Protection team on behalf of the previous tenant.

Follow the guided setup process to create a new account for the new tenant. Once the tenant is created, you should be able to access the support portal and submit a ticket referring to the locked account.

In the ticket description, clearly explain that you are trying to regain access to your previous Microsoft 365 tenant and require assistance from the Data Protection team. You can use or adapt the following message:

"Hello, I’m currently unable to access my previous Microsoft 365 tenant due to losing MFA access, which prevents me from receiving verification codes. I’m the global admin, but I’m locked out and unable to generate a QR code or bypass MFA.

I created this new tenant solely to request assistance. I kindly ask to be connected with the Data Protection team to verify my identity and help me recover access to the original tenant.

This is urgent, as I rely on Microsoft 365 for my work and have been unable to operate for several days. I’m available to provide any documentation or verification needed to support the recovery process."

Ticket Support: In the Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support.

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your issue is resolved, as this will help you avoid any accidental billing. You may prefer the following resource for detailed instructions: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

Hopefully, this information helps point you toward a resolution. If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your understanding, and I wish you all the best with your domain recovery request.
