Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
If account recovery is blocked because unusual activity was detected, use the Microsoft Sign-in Helper first to identify the correct recovery path.
If the account is locked, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com to request a security code. Any phone number that can receive text messages can be used; it does not need to be linked to the account.
If that does not work:
- Use the Account recovery form.
- Complete it on a device previously used to sign in to the account.
- Submit it from a familiar location, such as home or office.
- Provide as much accurate account information as possible.
- If the request is denied, try again. Recovery attempts can be made up to two times per day.
Important limits:
- If two-step verification is turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support cannot reset the account or change account details.
- Microsoft support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or access and change account details.
- If the account has been inactive for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
If the username is reported as not existing, use the Sign-in Helper.
