A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If this is a work or school account, there is no self-service bypass if the only allowed method is Microsoft Authenticator/passkey and no other sign-in method is available.
Try these in order:
- On the sign-in screen, select Other ways to sign in or Sign in another way.
- If Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app is available, use it:
- Enter the username and select Next.
- Select Send notification.
- Open Authenticator on the mobile device.
- If shown, enter or tap the matching number, then Approve.
- If the app shows You haven't finished yet, add the account directly in Microsoft Authenticator:
- Open Authenticator.
- Select + Add account.
- Choose the account type.
- Select Sign in with Microsoft and complete verification.
- If the passkey was on an old or different device, set up a new passkey after signing in with any alternative offered. If a passkey is no longer valid, select another sign-in method, then remove old passkeys that no longer apply.
- If this is an Android Work profile and the passkey was created in the Personal profile, recreate the passkey in the Work profile.
- If no alternative method appears and Authenticator/passkey is the only option, contact the organization’s IT admin and ask them to issue a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) or reset MFA methods and require re-registration.
For a personal Microsoft account, if the passkey is missing or invalid:
- Try another offered sign-in method.
- Set up a new passkey.
- Delete old passkeys that no longer apply.
- If the QR code for mobile sign-in does not appear, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices, both devices are in range, and both are connected to the internet.
- If still blocked, use the Sign-in helper or Contact Support options in Microsoft Support.
