Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Try this in order:
- In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, go to File > Account > Update License.
- This forces Microsoft 365 to refresh the license immediately.
- The button appears in Microsoft 365 apps starting with version 2401, and its presence does not mean the license is expired.
- Make sure the app is signed in with the correct account.
- A Couldn't update license error is commonly caused by being signed in with an account that does not have the license.
- In the top-right corner of the app, verify the signed-in account matches the one that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Close all Office apps and open them again.
- A successful license update may require restarting the apps so they can use the current license.
- Check whether the product shows as licensed.
- In File > Account, under Product Information, confirm the licensed product name is shown.
- If the apps show Unlicensed Product, try these basic activation checks:
- Sign in with the account used to buy or receive Office.
- Check for multiple copies of Office installed, because multiple installs can cause activation conflicts.
- Check whether the subscription is active.
- Update Office.
- Open an Office app.
- Go to File > Account.
- Select Update Options > Update Now.
- If Update Now is missing, select Enable Updates first, then Update Now.
- If activation still fails, check common Windows causes:
- Verify the computer’s date, time, and time zone are correct.
- Try running the Office app as administrator.
- Check whether a firewall, antivirus, or proxy is blocking activation.
If the issue started right after a new purchase or new entitlement, background license refresh can take up to 72 hours, and Update License is the manual way to refresh it sooner.
