Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
This pattern matches a temporary Microsoft account protection lock after repeated sign-in or reset attempts. It can continue even after a successful password reset, and more attempts can prolong the cooldown.
Recommended path:
- Stop all sign-in and password reset attempts for at least 24 hours. If it still loops, wait up to 48 hours before trying again.
- After the wait, use the Microsoft account Sign-in Helper. It checks the account state and guides the next recovery step.
- If the password is still not accepted, use Recover your account and complete the verification steps:
- enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name
- choose where to receive the security code
- enter the code
- set a new password
- If the account is not recognized or recovery still fails, complete the Account recovery form. If possible, submit it from a device and location previously used with that account.
- On iPhone, if this is happening in the Mail app or Outlook mobile app, update to the latest Outlook mobile app version. Microsoft notes recurring password prompts can happen when app security standards change.
- If sign-in still fails after the cooldown and recovery steps, use Contact Microsoft Support, enter the problem, select Get Help, and then Contact Support.
Important limits:
- Support agents cannot send password reset links or directly change account details.
- If two-step verification is enabled and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support cannot bypass that protection.
- For a new desktop setup, account access must be restored first before setup can complete with that Microsoft account.
