Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
This behavior is not expected for a normal reply in classic Outlook. By default, replying includes the original message below the reply, and the original message should still remain in the Inbox unless it was moved by a view, filter, or another action.
Try these checks in order:
- Search the message, then check its folder location.
- Since the message appears in search, it is likely still in the mailbox but not visible in the current Inbox view.
- Check whether the message was moved to another folder.
- Look in Deleted Items, Archive, Junk Email, and any custom folders.
- If found, move it back to Inbox.
- Check Focused/Other or filtering if the account is Outlook.com.
- If Focused Inbox is enabled, the message may be on the Other tab instead of Inbox.
- Review rules that might move messages after reply.
- In classic Outlook, go to File > Manage Rules & Alerts and check for any rule that moves or deletes messages.
- Start classic Outlook in safe mode to rule out add-ins.
- Close Outlook.
- Press the Windows key, type outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter.
- Then reply to a test message and see whether the original still disappears from Inbox.
- If the problem does not happen in safe mode, an add-in is likely involved.
- Repair the Outlook profile if the issue continues.
- A damaged profile can cause mailbox display and sync problems.
- Repair Outlook if needed.
- Microsoft notes that repairing classic Outlook is a standard troubleshooting step and can take up to half an hour.
Also check the reply setting for how original messages appear:
- Go to File > Options > Mail.
- Under Replies and forwards, make sure When replying to a message is set to Include original message text.
- This controls the reply content, not whether the Inbox item stays visible, but it is worth confirming.
If the message is only found by search and not visible in any folder, the most likely causes from the available guidance are:
- a rule moving it,
- an add-in affecting Outlook behavior,
- or a profile/view issue in classic Outlook.
