Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
Hi Ron,
Thank you for reaching out.
Replying should not normally remove the original message from the Inbox in Classic Outlook. The most likely causes are a filtered view, Conversation View, or a rule that moves messages after you reply.
To resolve the issue, please follow these steps:
- Find the Message’s Actual Folder
- Search for the missing email.
- In the search results, select View > Current View.
- Select View Settings > Columns.
- Under Select available columns from, choose All Mail fields.
- Add In Folder, then select OK.
The new In Folder column will show whether the email is in Archive, Deleted Items, another folder, or still in the Inbox but hidden by the current view.
- Reset the Inbox View
- Open your Inbox.
- Select the View tab > Current View.
- Choose Reset View.
- Select Yes.
- Then select View Settings > Current View > Filter.
- Confirm that no filters are enabled.
Also check the top of the message list. If it says Unread, change it to All. A replied message becomes read, so an Unread filter can make it appear to disappear.
- Check Conversation View
If messages are grouped by conversation, the original may be collapsed inside the conversation or displayed according to its latest message.
- Open the View tab.
- Temporarily clear Show as Conversations.
- Check whether the original email reappears.
Alternatively, keep Conversation View enabled and select:
- View > Current View> Conversation Settings.
- Enable Show Messages from Other Folders.
- Enable Always Expand Selected Conversation.
- Check Rules
A rule may be moving the message after it is received or after its status changes.
- Select File.
- Select Manage Rules & Alerts.
- Look for rules containing actions such as:
- Move it to the specified folder
- Delete it
- Mark it as read
- Temporarily disable suspicious rules and test again.
I hope the information I shared earlier was somewhat helpful in addressing your issue. If you have any further questions or updates, please don’t hesitate to share. I’m always happy to assist further if needed.
