Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
If Microsoft says storage is full but the paid account shows plenty of space left, the supported causes are:
- Cloud storage and mailbox storage are separate limits.
- Cloud storage includes OneDrive files and photos, Outlook.com attachments and inline images, Teams personal attachments, Loop files, and some Designer content.
- Mailbox storage includes Outlook.com email, calendar, contacts, and deleted messages.
- Outlook.com attachments count toward Microsoft cloud storage, and mailbox content has its own quota.
- If either limit is exceeded, email can stop working.
- If Microsoft cloud storage is full, Outlook.com email can be blocked even when mailbox storage itself is not full.
- Incoming emails can be returned to the sender until usage is back under quota.
- Deleted content can still count.
- Items in the OneDrive Recycle Bin count toward cloud storage.
- Deleted messages count toward mailbox storage until removed.
- A subscription or storage entitlement may have changed.
- Storage can change if a subscription expired or renewal failed.
- If the account is a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, only the subscription account holder can extend storage.
What to check:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard and open Microsoft storage to verify the current usage and quota.
- In OneDrive, review Manage your OneDrive storage and empty the Recycle Bin.
- In Outlook.com, check mailbox storage and remove large mail or attachments, then clear Deleted messages.
- Confirm the subscription is active in the Microsoft account services area.
- If the account is over quota, either free up space or use the available upgrade/additional storage options.
What happens if the account really is over quota:
- OneDrive files become read-only and new uploads or sync stop.
- Outlook.com cannot send or receive email.
- After 3 months over the OneDrive limit, the OneDrive account can be frozen.
- After 6 months, OneDrive files may be deleted and are non-recoverable.
