My email to login to my account is no longer valid

My email address to login into my account is no longer valid, so I cannot get a code to get into the email, to try and retrieve my bitlocker recovery key. I have updated my email address and it has now locked me out completely for 30 days.

This 30-day delay is intentional. It’s a security safeguard designed to protect users in case someone else tries to hijack their account by changing recovery info. The wait gives the rightful owner time to notice and stop unauthorized changes.

Unfortunately, this policy cannot be bypassed. Microsoft explains it further here.

My laptop has crashed and the email on the microsoft account is no longer working as it was shutdown by the provider in January this year, so I am not able to receive a code to access by bitlocker recovery key, as I cannot receive a code. Hence why I updated by email address, to try and get this. Is there anyway this can be accelerated before 30 days, as I could not reverse the action of updating the email login.

I am sorry Lynda, there's no way to bypass this 30-day wait or speed up the process.

If you must use the computer now, the only option is to factory reset/clean install it, start over with a different account. Wait 30 days and link this account back. However, doing so you do lose your files unless they were backed up to cloud.

I can't use the computer, it won't load, reset or do anything, it is wanting the reset key code, so I cannot factory reset/clean it. Yes I am aware of losing my files, which were not backed up, hence the urgency of getting into the account, to access my files.

While I understand the urgency, it is a security policy no one can bypass, and it is simply out of our control. There's no special process to speed it up. Microsoft support agents are not given access to do so either. I am sorry. It is extremely important to keep your information up to date in the future to prevent this from happening again.

You can clean install it to get the computer going again, but since you want to access your files, that is not ideal because it deletes everything.

But I will share the clean install instructions anyway so you have it.

The following steps should be done on a working Windows computer:

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 click on the "download now" button under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

Run the tool and select "Create installation media for another PC."

Choose "USB flash drive" as the media to use for the installation and select "Next."

Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space to your computer.

Select the USB flash drive you want to use, and then select "Next."

The tool will then download the required files and create the installation media.

Now these steps will be done on your problematic computer:

Go to the computer's BIOS boot menu to have it boot from the USB drive.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 11, making sure to choose "Custom install" and select the option to delete all existing partitions.

Once the installation is complete, you'll have a clean installation of Windows 11 on your computer.
