Microsoft Media Keyboard not working on Windows 11

Hello,

I was trying to find anything related on the Internet but the fixes did not work for me.

I have a Microsoft Media Keyboard X891041-008 11/2017 and it doesn't seem to work.

The dongle is being read as HID keyboard Device in device manager and the keyboard itself is giving static green light after turning on for about 10 seconds.

I tried to pair them again using left ctrl + esc combo while turning the keyboard on (it started flashing green) with no effect.

The mouse and keyboard Center app says that no supported devices were detected.

Also I have tried to force Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard driver onto the dongle via device manager and it didn't help too.

I was trying to find a product page for this keyboard in search for the driver but there is none.

I am running clean windows 11 with all the updates.

Is there any fix for me in this situation?

Cheers

K

    Hi Krystian T,

Thanks for sharing everything you’ve already tested. At this point, I’d like to confirm whether the USB receiver is the original one supplied with this keyboard or whether it was obtained separately.

Could you also share clear photos of the labels underneath both the keyboard and receiver? Please cover any serial numbers before posting. The number X891041-008 may be a part number rather than the complete model number, so the other label details may help identify the correct device.

Since a different keyboard driver was manually assigned, I suggest restoring the normal driver:

    1. Open Device Manager and locate the receiver under Keyboards or Human Interface Devices.
    2. Open Properties > Details and select Hardware Ids.
    3. Please share only the sections containing VID_#### and PID_####. Do not share the Device Instance Path, serial number, Container ID, computer name or any other long device-specific value.
    4. Return to the device entry, select Uninstall device, restart the PC and reconnect the receiver so Windows can reinstall its normal driver.

Afterward, kindly let me know what driver name appears and whether Device Manager shows a warning icon or error code.

If this is the original matching receiver and the issue remains after removing the manually assigned driver, it would point more strongly to a problem with the keyboard, receiver or the wireless connection between them.

Based on the symptoms already checked, the supported next steps are:

    1. Verify the basic hardware path again:
      • Unplug the USB receiver, wait a short time, then plug it back in.
      • Try a different USB port.
      • If the receiver is connected through a USB hub or dock, remove the hub and connect it directly to the PC.
      • Check that the keyboard batteries are fresh or fully charged.
      • Make sure there is no dirt or blockage affecting keys or sensors.
    2. Re-establish the wireless connection:
      • For USB wireless devices, unplug the USB wireless receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
      • If the device has a Reset button on the keyboard or USB receiver, use it to disconnect and reconnect the wireless connection.
    3. Test whether the keyboard hardware itself still works:
      • Connect the keyboard and receiver to another PC.
      • If it does not work on another PC either, replacement may be necessary.
      • When testing on another PC, make sure the correct driver is installed if the device requires one.
    4. If the keyboard is detected but does not behave correctly in Windows 11:
      • Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Region & language and confirm the keyboard input language matches the PC display language.
      • Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and confirm the PC has the latest updates.
    5. If special keys or custom behavior are the issue rather than basic typing:
      • Open Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse to review mouse-related settings.
      • Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center is used only for supported devices, so “no supported devices were detected” indicates the app is not recognizing this keyboard as a supported model.

Since Windows already detects the dongle as an HID keyboard device and the keyboard still does not function after re-pairing attempts, forcing a different driver is not supported by the provided guidance. The most decisive check is testing the keyboard on another PC. If it fails there as well, the hardware is the likely cause.
