Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
If Microsoft 365 Personal shows as installed but Word or Excel says the subscription is expired, the install is usually not activated yet or the renewal has not fully applied.
Try this:
- Open Word or Excel and check the message in the yellow bar.
- If it says Renew your subscription, select Buy and complete the renewal.
- If it says Subscription expired, select Reactivate.
- If a new unused retail key was purchased, select Enter Key.
- If Microsoft 365 was already purchased, make sure the subscription actually started.
- If the purchase was a physical box or card, the subscription does not start until the product key on the box or card is redeemed.
- If it was bought online, check the subscription expiration status online. If the expiration date is still wrong, contact Microsoft Support.
- After renewing or activating, close all Office apps and open them again.
- This is required to remove the renewal message.
- If the apps still show expired, sign in to the Office app with the Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.
- For a Product deactivated message, select Sign in and enter the Microsoft 365 account to activate Office.
- If Office came preinstalled on the device, it may still need activation.
- Use the activation flow shown in the app, or follow Activate Office.
- If access is needed right away, use Microsoft 365 for the web in a browser from microsoft365.com or Office on the web from Office.com.
What happens until this is fixed:
- Word and Excel can usually still open documents.
- Office runs in Reduced Functionality Mode, so documents can be viewed and printed, but not edited or saved until the subscription is reactivated.
If the subscription page already shows active and the apps still say expired, contact Microsoft Support. For work or school accounts, contact the Microsoft 365 admin or IT department.
