Hi H V,
Thanks for sharing such a detailed explanation. Since the camera works after restoring the Dell recovery image and disappears only after later software changes, I agree that it would be more useful to identify the trigger rather than reinstall Windows again.
Could you confirm a few details?
- Which Dell applications or components did you remove before the camera stopped working?
- Does the issue happen immediately after installing JDK or Python, or only after restarting?
- In Settings > Windows Update > Update history, was a camera, chipset, graphics, or firmware update installed around the same time?
- When the camera works, do any camera-related devices appear under Cameras or System devices? If so, do they disappear or show a warning afterward?
Please also open Dell’s support page, let it identify your laptop, and check the Camera category for any camera or imaging-related driver available for your configuration. If one is listed, reinstall it and restart the laptop.
You can also try a clean boot to check for a background software conflict:
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig and press Enter.
- Under Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then Disable all and Apply.
- Under Startup, select Open Task Manager and disable all enabled startup apps.
- Close Task Manager, select OK, restart the computer, and test the camera.
If the camera works in a clean boot, re-enable the disabled items in small groups until the issue returns. After testing, open msconfig, select Normal startup, re-enable the services and startup apps and restart.
*Disclaimer: A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background service is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.
These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step so that it will help you get back on track.
You can also run perfmon /rel and check Reliability Monitor around the time the camera disappeared. Look for an application removal, driver installation, or Windows update recorded at approximately the same time.
If possible, please share screenshots of the relevant Reliability Monitor entry and the Cameras and System devices sections in both the working and failed states. Please hide any other personal details before posting them.
I hope these checks help narrow down which component is changing the camera configuration.
