I am incandescant with rage, and there is no way I will ever be able to convey to microsoft what they have done. Onedrive, installed and activated by default, "SYNC"s your hard drive without your approval. If they did ask for me approval, they did it in a stealthy way that they should be deeply ashamed of.
Then after a while you get constant warnings that one drive is full and you need to pay more for extra cloud storage, which of course you don't want, because why would you. So you go to one drive online, and delete a bunch of files you don't want backed up online anyway.
But, no, what you've actually done is DELETE YOUR FILES FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE, because one drive is "SYNC"ing, not working as a backup like any other online cloud system ever has in the history of any system built buy anyone operating more than two neurons.
Your greedy decision to fool people into paying for unecessary online storage space when we have literal spare terrabytes at home has cost me more than you will ever know. You have deleted 3.5 years of critical legal paperwork that supports my disability, and my life will now descend into a horrific shambles that I will be shocked if I survive.
For the love of god, tell the greedy corporate suits they are killing human beings with their catastrophically idiotic decisions.

Sorry for this frustrating situation. Here are some suggestions you can try:
Stop using the affected PC immediately. Do not install programs, download files, run cleanup tools, or reset Windows. Deleted data can remain recoverable until new activity overwrites it.
Check the Windows Recycle Bin. Locally available OneDrive files deleted during synchronization may also have been placed there.
Right-click the original Documents or Desktop folder, select Properties > Previous Versions, and look for a copy created by File History, Windows Backup, or a restore point.
If no backup exists, use Windows File Recovery from the Microsoft Store, saving recovered files to a different physical drive. The source and destination drives must be different.
Because these records are critical, it is recommended that you stop before attempting repeated recovery scans and contact a reputable professional data-recovery service.

It has been a while and I am writing to see how things are going with this issue.

Sadly to make space to make the "give me $6" annoyance go away, I had to empty the recycle bin too.
Anyway, me and ChatGPT agent have done a file recovery with about 20 of the 2000 files I need being recovered. Chatters also wrote a program to scan through 3.5 years of gmails and extract every attachment, and then began classifying them to at least partially rebuild my lost data. We'll see if this works well enough, or if this event ends up killing me.
All you need to reply now is, presuming you believe it, "sorry we made this unclear, I'm recommending to the decision makers that we make online deletions come with a popup warning that it also deletes things from your local hard drive".

I understand your point. The consequences of deleting files from OneDrive were not clear enough in this situation, and a prominent warning explaining that the deletion will also remove locally synced copies would have helped prevent this.
