A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
- Open File Explorer and go to the OneDrive folder.
- Find the Documents folder or the files to move.
- If files show a cloud icon, download them first so they exist locally:
- Right-click the file or folder.
- Select Always keep on this device.
- Wait until the icon changes to a green check mark.
- Go to the local folder where the files should live, such as This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Users > your user folder > Documents.
- Copy or move the files from OneDrive\Documents to the local Documents folder.
- Copy/paste is the safer option because it is less prone to errors than drag-and-drop.
- If Windows is still backing up Documents to OneDrive, turn that off in OneDrive before treating the local folder as the main location:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Select Help and Settings > Settings.
- Use Manage Backup and turn off folder backup for Documents.
If the goal is to move the entire OneDrive folder to another local drive or external drive, the supported method is:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon.
- Go to Help and Settings > Settings > Account.
- Select Unlink this PC.
- Move the OneDrive folder in File Explorer.
- Start OneDrive setup again.
- When prompted for the folder location, select Change Location and choose the new local drive or folder.
