Release my domain from a dormant tenant I created and can no longer access

I need a domain released from a Microsoft 365 tenant that I created myself and can no longer sign in to. I am not asking to have administrative access restored. I only need the domain removed so it is no longer claimed.

Domain: kreyenbuhl.com

Tenant ID: [Moderator note: personally identifiable Information removed]

Default domain: kreyenbuhl.onmicrosoft.com

I created this tenant on 6 March 2024 through a free trial. The Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription under it was cancelled on 8 April 2024. The tenant has been dormant since, with no licences and no activity. Cancelling the subscription did not release the domain, so the claim has persisted for over two years.

The only administrator account is [Moderator note: personally identifiable Information removed]@kreyenbuhl.onmicrosoft.com. That account still exists in the directory, but self-service password reset reports that the username does not exist, which I take to mean no authentication methods were ever registered against it and the tenant has held no licences since cancellation. There is no self-service route back in.

To pre-empt the obvious suggestion: I also hold a personal Microsoft account at [Moderator note: personally identifiable Information removed]@kreyenbuhl.com. It is on the consumer identity provider, it is a different identity from the directory account above, and signing in with it returns AADSTS50020. The tenant is fully managed, not unmanaged, so internal admin takeover does not apply either.

I have owned kreyenbuhl.com continuously since 7 June 2005 and I control its DNS. I can publish any TXT record, at any hostname, with any value, on request and within the hour. Microsoft has previously verified my control of this domain by exactly that method. I can also provide registrar records and the Microsoft notification emails for both the trial creation and the cancellation.

Could a moderator please engage the Data Protection team to release kreyenbuhl.com from tenant [Moderator note: personally identifiable Information removed]? Closing the tenant at the same time would be welcome, as nothing depends on it.

    Hi Stephen,

To reach out to Data Protection Team, you can find Microsoft's support numbers here:

Customer service phone numbers: Contact Microsoft customer support | Microsoft Support

When contacting Microsoft, be prepared to verify ownership of the subscription. You may be asked for information such as:

    • Organization name
    • Billing or payment information
    • Registered phone number
    • Alternate email address

Once your identity is verified, you can proceed with request to remove your domain.

    Tips for navigating the IVR:

In some countries, an automated voice system is used. Example of a dialogue:

    • IVR: What problem is bothering you?
    • Client: Lost access to the only admin account
    • IVR: What product do you use?
    • Customer: Office 365 for business
    • IVR: School or Business Account?
    • Client: Companies
    • IVR: Are you an administrator?
    • Client: Yes
    • IVR: Is there another administrator in your organization?
    • Client: No. I am the only admin in my tenant
    • IVR: Do you need to create a support ticket?
    • Client: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

I also recommend calling during business hours. In my experience, it can be difficult to get through to the correct support queue, and automated systems don't always work as expected. If you can't get through on your first try, I suggest trying again later or at a different time.

In case you are unable to contact the frontline support:

Consider signing up for a trial subscription to create a new tenant. Once set up, you can access the new tenant's admin console and submit a support ticket to speak with the data protection team on behalf of the previous tenant. Once your issue is resolved, please remember to cancel the trial subscription to avoid any unintended charges.

If your organization's subscription is from a partner or reseller: Contact the reseller's support provider to help open a service request on behalf of you instead.

I hope this helps point you in the right direction. If you have any updates or additional questions, feel free to reply back and I'll do my best to assist further.
