If the new laptop is asking for verification from an old Microsoft account or old sign-in method, use one of these supported paths without wiping the transferred data first:
- If access to the Microsoft account still exists on another device, update the sign-in verification methods there.
- Go to the account security info management page.
- Add a new phone number or email under Security info.
- Verify the new method with the code sent there.
- Then try signing in on the new laptop again and choose the new recovery option.
- If no old verification method is available, use the account recovery flow.
- At sign-in, choose I don’t have any of these if that option appears.
- Complete the Microsoft account recovery form.
- If the laptop was set up under the wrong account during transfer, switch the Windows account to the correct Microsoft account or create a new Windows user tied to that account.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Your info.
- If available, select Switch to a Local account or Stop automatically logging into apps with this account.
- Then switch back to a Microsoft account sign-in using the account that contains the files and settings.
- Also sign in to OneDrive with that same Microsoft account so synced files can appear.
- If needed, create a new user account and sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create the new account and sign in with the Microsoft account that was used on the old laptop.
- Sign out of the current account and sign in to the new one.
- If the old account on the new laptop is no longer needed, remove it afterward.
- If the device is asking for a PIN, use the sign-in screen recovery options.
- Select I forgot my password or I forgot my PIN.
- Reset the credential from the sign-in screen.
Important: avoid a factory reset first. Resetting the PC can remove apps, settings, and potentially access to the transferred data. Try account recovery or switching to the correct Microsoft account before any reset.
If the transferred files were copied locally by the store, signing in with a different Windows account may still leave those files on the device, but they may be under the original user profile. In that case, creating a new account and then checking whether the copied data is accessible from the old profile is the safer next step than resetting the PC.
