Signing into email when Microsoft Authenticator will not display code

I have been trying to sign into my work email for about an hour now but have been completely unsuccessful. I was logged off of the email on my phone and my laptop but when trying to resign in, it brings me to the Microsoft Authenticator app on my phone and requests a code. Unfortunately, the email logged out of the Authenticator app as well, so no code will be displayed. When I’ve tried to work around the issue by signing in through the app, it also requests a code sent to the device and doesn’t give me any other option. I need access to this work email, and this 2 factor authentication process is currently making my wish I was more susceptible to hacking. How do I fix this issue so I can sign into without needing the app to verify?

    Hi Lexi,

If your account is prompting you to verify your sign-in through the Microsoft Authenticator app, this requirement is typically enforced by your organization's security policies, such as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or Conditional Access settings.

Unfortunately, this is not something that can be disabled from your end. The authentication methods available for your account are managed by your organization's IT administrator.

If you no longer have access to the Authenticator app or are unable to complete the verification, it sounds like your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) setup may need to be reset.

Because you're using a work or school account, the MFA settings are managed by your organization's IT administrator. Unfortunately, this isn't something that can be reset from the user side.

I'd recommend reaching out to your organization's IT administrator and explaining that you're unable to sign in because you're stuck between Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft Authenticator app and are no longer receiving authentication prompts or codes.

You can specifically ask whether they can:

    • Reset your MFA settings
    • Require MFA re-registration
    • Remove your existing Authenticator registration so you can set it up again

You may also want to share the following Microsoft article with them: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID | …

If you are unsure who your IT administrator is, you can refer to this official Microsoft guide for assistance: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

Once your IT administrator resets your MFA registration, you should be able to sign in again and go through the Microsoft Authenticator setup process from the beginning, including scanning a new QR code on your device.

I hope this points you in the right direction. If you receive any updates from your IT team or run into any issues along the way, feel free to reply back with more details and I'll be happy to help further.
