Request domain release from orphaned Microsoft 365 tenant

I own a custom domain that is attached to a Microsoft 365 tenant I can no longer administer. I need either Global Administrator recovery or release of the domain from that tenant.

Current state:

  • Self-service password reset fails with SSPR_0011 (no password reset policy configured for the organization)
  • Self-service signup is blocked, so I cannot provision any license, including Fabric Free
  • The work/school account password on record no longer authenticates
  • The email exists as both a personal Microsoft account and a work/school account, which complicates sign-in
  • Consumer support states this is out of scope; business support requires Microsoft 365 admin center access, which I do not have

The tenant holds no active users or data we depend on. Our mail and files are hosted on other platforms.

I control DNS for the domain (Google Cloud DNS nameservers) and can add a TXT verification record immediately on request. I can also provide business documentation showing the company owns the domain. I have the tenant ID and can supply it privately.

What is the correct escalation path for domain disassociation in this situation?

Thank you — I tried the support hotline first. I was unable to reach a live agent; the automated system would not route me to a person. I'm now going with your second suggestion and creating a trial tenant to submit the support request from there.

Can you confirm what the Data Protection Team will need from me? I have the tenant ID, the customer/billing ID, full DNS control of the domain, and business documentation showing the company owns it. I'd like to have everything ready when the ticket is opened.

    Hi Joshua,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

To get assistance with removing your domain from the current tenant, you need to contact the Microsoft Data Protection Team.

To contact the Microsoft Data Protection Team, you can use one of the following two methods:

    1. Contact Microsoft through the support hotline for your region

Please look up the appropriate support hotline for your region and call Microsoft’s frontline support. After that, request them to create a ticket for you through the following link:

Customer service phone numbers – Microsoft Support

Tips for navigating the IVR system (automated phone support)

To help you navigate the IVR system more effectively, please refer to the guidance below:

    1. When calling the support number, you may hear an introduction for about 30 seconds, for example: “You can visit the link…”. You can skip this and wait until the system presents the available options.
    2. Then:
      • Press “1” as a business email user.
        • Press “1” again to select technical support.

In some regions, the initial interaction may be fully automated. Below is a sample dialogue you can prepare in advance:

    • What kind of problem are you experiencing?

    Answer: Authenticator

    • What products do you use?

    Answer: Office 365 for business

    • Is this for an education or company account?

    Answer: For companies

    • Are you an administrator?

    Answer: Yes

    • Are there any other administrators in your organization?

Answer: No. I am the only admin in my tenant.

    • Do you need a service request?

Answer: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me directly to the Data Protection Team.

    1. Create a trial tenant to contact Microsoft Support

You can create a new trial tenant and then use this tenant to submit a support request to Microsoft regarding the removal of your domain from the current tenant.

You can visit the trial tenant registration page to create a new tenant:

Microsoft 365 Pricing for Business: Plans & Features

Once the trial tenant has been successfully created, follow the instructions to create a support ticket with Microsoft:

Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

After creating the support ticket, please follow the steps in the relevant documentation to turn off automatic renewal to prevent the trial tenant from automatically renewing after the trial period ends.

Manage recurring billing in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

I hope this information is helpful.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.
