Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
The available recovery options are:
- Try the Sign-in Helper first. It can identify many sign-in issues and is the recommended first step.
- If the account is not recognized and the message says "We couldn't find an account with that username" or "account doesn't exist", use the Sign-in Helper.
- If the username is correct but sign-in still fails, use Recover your account and follow the password reset flow:
- Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name used to sign in.
- Choose where to receive the security code.
- Enter the code.
- Set a new password.
- If access to the usual verification methods is no longer available, complete the Account recovery form. To improve the chance of success:
- Use a device previously used to sign in to the account.
- Complete the form from a familiar location such as home or office.
- Provide a working alternate email address that can receive the recovery result.
- Include as much information as possible, such as old passwords, Outlook.com contacts, exact email subject lines, Skype details, Xbox console hardware ID if applicable, and other Microsoft services used with the account.
- If unsure about some answers, provide the best possible information; wrong answers do not count against the recovery attempt.
- Microsoft reviews recovery form submissions and sends the result to the working email address provided, usually within 24 hours.
- If the account cannot be verified, the recovery form can be retried up to two times per day.
- If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
- If two-step verification was turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
- For technical support, use Contact Microsoft Support. Support can help route the issue, but support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or access and change account details.
