Domain already has an unmanaged Entra tenant — how to get a work account for evaluation?

Our company domain already resolves to an existing Microsoft Entra tenant (the /.well-known/openid-configuration endpoint for the domain returns an issuer, and the tenant's federation brand name is still "Default Directory"). It appears to have been created by a self-service/viral signup and nobody in the company knows who administers it.

This leaves me blocked in three directions:

  1. Signing in with my corporate address returns "This username may be incorrect... Otherwise, contact your admin" — the domain is known, but my user does not exist in that tenant.
  2. Creating a personal Microsoft account with the corporate address is rejected ("you can't sign up with a work or school email").
  3. Trials that require a work account (Dynamics 365 Sales, Power Apps Developer Plan) cannot be started, and signing in with a personal outlook.com account returns AADSTS500200.

    Unfortunately, as a forum moderator, I am not able to inspect the tenant behind your domain or identify who administers it. My role here is limited to general guidance you can apply from your side. Your findings are consistent with the domain being attached to an existing Entra tenant, though the OpenID metadata and a "Default Directory" name do not on their own confirm that the tenant is unmanaged.

    The good news is that you do not need to resolve any of that before evaluating. Create a separate test tenant and use its initial .onmicrosoft.com address, for example ******@companyevaluation.onmicrosoft.com, then sign up for the Power Apps Developer Plan or the Dynamics 365 trial with that account. The Power Apps documentation takes exactly this approach, stating that a work account is required and directing you to create a test tenant first if you do not have one. You may also qualify for a tenant through the Microsoft 365 Developer Program, or you can use a one month free trial.

    There is no need to add your corporate custom domain to that tenant for an isolated evaluation, which keeps it entirely separate from the existing directory. Personal accounts such as Outlook.com are not accepted for these organizational services, which is what AADSTS500200 reflects.

    Recovering the existing tenant is a separate exercise from getting your evaluation running, so I would treat it as a second track once you are unblocked. If that becomes a priority, it is worth raising with Microsoft Support from your new tenant, with the domain, the tenant ID if you can determine it, and evidence of DNS control to hand. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.
