Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
This error is commonly caused by a Microsoft 365 subscription or payment issue.
Try these steps in order:
- Close all Office apps Close Word and any other Office app completely.
- Check that the subscription is active
Go to Services & subscriptions: https://account.microsoft.com/services Sign in with the Microsoft account that was used to buy Microsoft 365, then check the Microsoft 365 section.
- If the subscription is expired, renew it.
- After renewing, restart Word and test sign-in again.
- Check the payment method
Go to Payment options: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments If the payment method shows an error, update it.
- This is important if the card expired or a payment was declined.
- After updating payment details, restart Word and try again.
- Make sure the correct account is being used Sign in with the same Microsoft account that is associated with the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- If Word shows a subscription notice and editing is blocked If the subscription issue is not resolved, Office can go into reduced functionality mode. In that state, documents can still be opened and printed, but editing and creating new files are blocked.
- Use Office on the web temporarily While resolving the subscription issue, Office on the web can be used at Office.com.
If the message in Word is specifically “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it.”, the supported fix is to verify the subscription status first, then update the payment information.
