Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Use the official recovery paths only:
- Start with the Sign-in Helper. It checks the account state and either gives self-help steps or routes to the next recovery option.
- If the account is compromised, use the hacked-account flow: Start.
- If the account still appears in Microsoft systems, submit the Account recovery form. Use:
- a working email address that can receive replies
- a device previously used to sign in
- a location commonly used before, such as home or office
- as much accurate account information as possible
- If the sign-in page says "The Microsoft account you've entered does not exist", first check the spelling and domain carefully, and try any other alias or phone number that was on the account.
- If the account was hacked, run a full malware scan on the PC before changing any passwords on related accounts. In Windows Security: Virus and threat protection > Scan options > Full scan > Scan now.
Important limits:
- If two-step verification was turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
- After submitting the recovery form, results are sent to the working email within 24 hours.
- If recovery fails, the form can be retried up to two times per day.
- If the attacker changed the sign-in email and the original address is no longer recognized, recovery chances are very limited. Community guidance in similar cases indicates the account may be unrecoverable if the official recovery tools no longer recognize it.
If access is restored, immediately review recent activity and change the password from the Security basics page.
