Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Use this recovery path:
- Start with the Sign-in Helper tool. It can identify the correct recovery option and may offer self-help or the chance to talk to an agent.
- If the account was compromised, first run a full malware scan on the PC before changing any password:
- Open Windows Security
- Go to Virus and threat protection
- Select Scan options > Full scan > Scan now
- If sign-in still fails, try Recover your account and enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name previously used on the account.
- If the original username is no longer recognized, use the Microsoft account recovery form. A working email address is required so recovery results can be sent there.
- If two-step verification was turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support agents cannot reset the password or change account details.
- After submitting the recovery form, a response is sent to the working email address within 24 hours. If the account cannot be verified, the form can be retried up to two times per day.
- If the username still shows as not found, contact support and report that the username has stopped working.
Important:
- Support agents are not allowed to send password reset links or access and change account details.
- After regaining access, review connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies because those settings may have been changed during the compromise.
