Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
For work or school accounts, there is no supported workaround if Microsoft Authenticator is required by the organization’s MFA or conditional access policy. If access to the app is lost, the account usually must be recovered through the organization’s IT administrator or help desk so MFA methods can be reset.
Try these self-service checks first:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator directly and make sure it is unlocked with the device PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for the app.
- Make sure the phone has internet access. If needed, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version.
- Restart the device.
- Check that the device date and time are correct.
- If the sign-in screen offers another verification method, use that instead.
- If too many sign-in attempts were made, wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
If the device is rooted or jailbroken, work or school accounts in Authenticator are blocked and cannot be used on that device.
If these steps do not restore access, the next step is to contact the school or work IT admin/help desk and ask for the MFA/security info to be reset or for re-registration of Microsoft Authenticator. After access is restored, security methods can be managed in the work or school account security info area.
