Try these checks in order:
- Turn off Sticky Keys and Filter Keys.
- Windows 11: Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
- Turn Sticky Keys and Filter Keys on or off as needed, but if the behavior is unexpected, set them Off.
- This is especially relevant when Shift keys are not working correctly or modifier keys seem stuck.
- Check keyboard language/input settings.
- Go to Start > Settings > Time & language > Region & language.
- Make sure the keyboard input language matches the display language.
- A mismatched layout can make keys behave incorrectly.
- Check for Windows updates.
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Install the latest updates, since keyboard and special key issues can be caused by missing updates.
- Inspect the keyboard for dust or debris.
- If only the A key is not responding, clean around that key.
- Use compressed air to blow dust and debris from the surface and between the keys, or gently vacuum the top of the keyboard using a dusting brush.
- Test whether the problem is hardware.
- If the keyboard has no lights or does not respond at all, test it on another PC if possible.
- If it also fails there, the keyboard may need to be replaced.
- If the A key is cracked, damaged, or has fallen off, submit a service order.
- If a key is physically damaged, that indicates hardware failure.
- If remapping software was used, check for an orphaned key.
- In PowerToys Keyboard Manager, a key can be remapped so the original key output no longer exists.
- If
Awas remapped to another key, create another remapped key that outputsA.
If this is a Surface Pro Keyboard or Type Cover, also do this:
- Open the Surface app.
- Expand Help & support.
- Check update status.
- Select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install available updates.
- Press Caps and Fn a couple of times and check whether the LED lights turn on and off.
- If the LED lights do not turn on, submit a service order.
- If the LED lights do turn on, the issue may be with Windows rather than the keyboard hardware.
If the key still does not work after cleaning, checking accessibility settings, language settings, and updates, the most likely cause is hardware failure and service or replacement is needed.
