Upgraded my pc with a new motherboard and cpu and cannot activate windows with my pre-existing product key.

    When you said pre-existing key, do you mean the license came with the device preinstalled? If so, you were on OEM license.

    For OEM license, once the motherboard changes, the license is gone, because OEM license is only activated on the motherboard it was first activated on, and it cannot be transfered.
