Sharing Microsoft 365 subscription

I bought a new laptop and subscribed to Microsoft 365.

My wife has an older laptop that already had a 365 subscription with a few months left on it.

I cancelled her subscription and then sent her an invite to join my 365 subscription

She accepted, but nothing happened.

On my computer it shows the invitation as pending.

On her computer it says:

1 more step to go: Please ask organizer to go to Subscriptions tab on [account.microsoft.com] and click on Start Sharing for you.

I don't see a "start sharing" on my computer...just a notice that she is still pending.

I've tried this several times and keep getting the same message.

Any idea what I should do?

Thanks!

The most likely cause is that the sharing setup has not fully completed at the family group level.

    Use this path:

    1. Sign in with the subscription owner account at https://account.microsoft.com/services/office/sharing.
    2. Check that the subscription is Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Premium. Sharing is not available for Microsoft 365 Basic or Microsoft 365 Personal.
    3. On the sharing page, select Share and send the invitation again by Email invite or Create link.
    4. Have the invitee accept the invitation within 48 hours.
    5. Make sure the invitee is not already in another Microsoft family group. If they are, they must leave that family group first, then accept the invitation again.
    6. After the invite is accepted and the family group join is completed, the subscription dashboard should update from Pending invite.

    Important details for this scenario:

    • Sharing works only for the subscription account holder.
    • The invitee must join the subscription owner’s family group for sharing to complete.
    • If the invitee is already in another shared subscription, sharing will not complete.
    • Canceling the older subscription does not by itself complete the new sharing setup.
    • If the owner needs someone else to become the sharing owner, that cannot be transferred mid-term. The current subscription period must expire, then the new owner must purchase a new subscription and share it manually.

If the page still only shows Pending invite, verify these exact conditions:

    • the owner account is the one that purchased the active Family or Premium subscription
    • there is at least one share remaining
    • the invite was sent to the invitee’s preferred email address
    • the invitee checked junk mail if using the email invite method
    • the invitee is not in another family group

    Hi, Gerald Townsend

This looks like the family membership and subscription-sharing records are out of sync. That creates the loop where one account shows “Pending” while the other asks for “Start sharing.”

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Sign in to the Microsoft Family dashboard with your account. If your wife already appears as an actual family member, remove her from the family group, not just from the pending invitations.

Wait several minutes, then create a new invitation from the subscription page.

On her laptop, sign out of every Microsoft account in the browser. Open a private or Incognito window, open only the newest invitation, and sign in with the exact Microsoft account she uses in Word or Excel. This avoids an old browser session opening the invitation under the wrong account.

If possible, accept the invitation from a phone or another browser. This remove-and-reinvite method is recommended when the person already appears in Family Safety but the subscription remains pending.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
