Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
For a Microsoft 365 for Home subscription, this is usually caused by payment-profile validation rather than the card number itself. Use this order:
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to Payment options: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
- Check the payment method for any error and update it.
- Make sure the card details match exactly:
- card number
- expiration date
- name on the card
- billing address, including city, state, and ZIP/postal code
- Confirm the subscription is still active on Services & subscriptions: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- If the subscription is past due, select Pay now for that subscription and complete payment after updating the payment method.
Important checks from Microsoft guidance:
- If the card was declined, verify the details exactly as shown on the card and statement.
- Make sure there are sufficient funds available.
- If the payment method shows an error, update it before retrying.
- If the card continues to be declined, contact the bank because the card might be inactive or blocked.
- For Microsoft 365 business accounts, the payment method must be issued from the same country or region as the tenant.
If the warning in Office says “Account Notice. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription”, that commonly means the subscription payment failed because the card expired or was canceled. Updating the payment method on the Payment options page is the documented fix.
If the card still cannot be added or updated after that, contact Microsoft support for billing assistance.
