A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If Microsoft Authenticator is the only sign-in method shown and no code or approval prompt arrives, use this order of checks:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator and make sure the app is unlocked.
- Verify notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator and not set to silent.
- Check the phone has a working internet connection. If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Make sure the device date and time are correct.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version.
- On the sign-in screen, select Other verification options if it appears, and try a different method.
For a Microsoft 365 work or school account, if no other verification method is available, the supported recovery path is:
- Ask another Global Admin to confirm the phone numbers and verification settings on the account.
- Ask a Global Admin to check whether the account is blocked from sign-in:
- In the Azure portal, open Microsoft Entra ID.
- Go to Users.
- Open the affected user profile.
- Check whether Block sign in is enabled, and disable it if it is.
- If there is no other Global Admin available, contact Microsoft Support. For tenant lockout or admin lockout scenarios, support may need to help restore access.
If the device was lost or the Authenticator registration is no longer valid, the organization’s Help desk or admin can clear the two-step verification settings so registration can be completed again at the next sign-in.
If the app still fails after these checks, send diagnostic logs from Authenticator: open the app menu and select Send feedback, then contact the IT admin.
