F10 camera key not turning off

Hello! I use an ASUS Zenbook and I noticed that when I press tha hotkey for tuning the camera on/off, it only says on but won't turn my camera off. I indicator light also won't turn on.

Windows has no control over the actions associated to the function keys (F1 - F12) on a laptop, that is always controlled by the laptop manufacturer.

If pressing F10 does not product the correct action, try pressing Fn + F10.

If that produces the correct action, press Fn + Esc to try to toggle the function lock on your keyboard.

If that does not resolve the problem, boot your laptop into BIOS and search in there for a setting to toggle between Function Keys and Action/Media Keys.

If that does not resolve the problem, most likely there is a problem with the utility Asus pre-installed to control the function keys, I need some more information about your laptop model.

Click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

thank you for your comment1 here is the screenshot. I also tried turning the camera access off and on and it worked for a bit, but when i try to turn the camera back on using the f10 key, it dont work again.

From there, download and install the MyAsus app and the ASUS System Control Interface v3 app.

Open the MyAsus app.

Go to Device Settings (or Customization).

Go to Input Device Settings to look for the Function keys settings to use that to enable the function keys on your keyboard.

According to recent comments on Reddit this is a common problem with many ASUS laptops. It only stopped working after the recent Windows 11 update, so saying that it is not a Microsoft problem is missing the point.

On ASUS Zenbook devices, the camera hotkey may require Fn + F10 rather than F10 alone. If pressing the key only shows Camera On and does not disable the camera, check these items in order:

Try the alternate key combination
- Press Fn + F10.
- On keyboards with alternate commands, the Fn key is used to trigger the alternate function.
Check for a physical privacy control
- Look near the webcam lens for a physical shutter or slider.
- Some laptops also have a camera privacy key that toggles camera privacy mode.
- If privacy mode is enabled, apps can show a gray image, lock icon, or appear as if the camera is blocked.
Verify Windows camera permissions
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on:
  - Camera access
  - Let apps access your camera
  - Let desktop apps access your camera
- Desktop apps cannot be toggled individually, but they are controlled by the desktop apps setting.
Test in the Windows Camera app
- Open the built-in Camera app.
- If the Camera app also cannot properly turn the camera on or shows a privacy screen, the issue is likely outside the app and related to privacy mode or device behavior.
Understand the indicator light behavior
- When a camera is streaming, the camera light should be on.
- If the device does not have a camera light, Windows can show a notification when the camera turns on or off.
If Windows Hello is enabled
- Windows Hello can still use the camera for sign-in even if app camera access is turned off.
- That behavior is expected.

If the goal is to fully block camera use, the most likely causes on this model are the wrong key combination or a separate hardware privacy mode/shutter.
