Adding phone number to the Outlook account is becoming a task. I have tried everything but failed. Can anyone let me know how to add phone number to my account.

For a personal Outlook.com/Microsoft account, a phone number can still be added as a sign-in alias, but there are important limits:

    1. Go to the Microsoft account "how you sign in" page: Edit account info.
    2. Add the phone number there as a phone alias.
    3. Complete the verification prompts.

    Important limits:

    • Only one mobile number can be used as a sign-in alias for a Microsoft account.
    • A phone number can only be added to one Microsoft account at a time.
    • VOIP numbers cannot be added as a way to sign in or get verification codes.

If the number is already linked to another Microsoft account:

    • If it is on another account owned by the same person, sign in to the account that currently has the number, select Remove next to that phone number, sign out, then sign in to the target account and select Add phone number.
    • If Microsoft shows a Transfer option, use that to move the number.
    • If there is no Transfer option, the number was recently used on another account. In that case, use a different number or try again after 30 days.

If the app shows Change number, select it and enter a different mobile number.

If the goal is to add a phone number as a security verification method, the available context indicates Microsoft now recommends other methods such as a recovery email address, Microsoft Authenticator, or a passkey/security key instead.

If self-service steps do not work, use Microsoft account support: Contact Microsoft Support.

You can successfully add and verify a phone number on your Outlook / Microsoft account by following these direct steps:

    • Open a Private / Incognito window in your browser (this prevents cache and extension conflicts).
    • Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with your Outlook email and password.
    • In the top navigation menu, select Security.
    • Click on Advanced security options (you may be asked to re-enter your password or approve an email verification prompt).
    • Under the section "Ways to prove who you are", click on Add a new way to sign in or verify.
    • Select Text a code.
    • Choose your correct Country code, enter your standard mobile number (do not include a leading 0), and click Next.
    • Enter the 4-digit or 6-digit security code received via SMS to verify the number.

If you still encounter an error, check these common fixes:

    • Use a standard mobile carrier number: Microsoft blocks virtual numbers (VoIP, Google Voice, Skype Numbers, or text-forwarding apps) for security verification.
    • Remove the number from old accounts: If the number is already tied as a primary alias/recovery option on another Microsoft/Skype account, it will fail. Log in to the old account and remove the number first.
    • Cooldown period: If you received multiple errors in a short time, Microsoft enforces a temporary 24- to 48-hour rate limit on SMS requests. Wait 24 hours without retrying before attempting again

Microsoft have announced they are deprecating SMS recovery codes on Microsoft accounts, it is no longer possible to add a new Phone number to a Microsoft account, they indicate we should not use the Authenticator app, a PassKey or add a new Email address for account recovery.
