Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
If the account may have been hacked, start with these steps:
- Check recent sign-in activity at https://account.live.com/activity. Review when and where the account was accessed and mark anything unfamiliar.
- If the account is blocked because of unusual sign-in activity, use the Sign-in Helper to unblock it.
- Add or review security info such as an alternate email address and mobile phone number so account recovery is easier.
- Change the password and enable stronger account protection if available.
- In Outlook.com, check for suspicious mail behavior:
- Settings > Mail > Forwarding and remove any forwarding address that was not added intentionally.
- Settings > Mail > Rules and remove unfamiliar rules that forward, move, or delete messages.
- Check Deleted Items, Junk Email, and Archive for missing mail.
- If messages look suspicious, do not open unexpected attachments or links. A yellow safety bar means content was blocked and should only be opened if the sender is trusted. A red safety bar means the message may be unsafe and should be deleted.
- Make sure the device has the latest operating system updates and updated antivirus software.
If access to the account has already been lost or unauthorized changes were made, follow the hacked account recovery guidance. If sign-in still fails, use the sign-in helper or contact support. Support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
