Hello,

I am hoping someone can advise on what may have happened to a Microsoft account that appears to have disappeared.

The account is:

[--PII REMOVED--]

This is not a forgotten password issue.

The account was active and being used on Xbox until the night of 12 September 2026. The Xbox gamertag associated with the account is:

[--PII REMOVED--]

The sequence of events is:

  • The Xbox was automatically signed out overnight.
  • Attempts to sign back in fail.
  • The Microsoft sign-in page says: "The Microsoft account you've entered does not exist."
  • The Microsoft account recovery form cannot recover the account because it reports that the account does not exist.
  • Sending an email to [--PII REMOVED--] results in a delivery failure with: "550 5.5.0 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable."
  • I have many historical emails sent to and from this address, proving that the account previously existed and was actively used.
  • The account was the only member of my Microsoft Family group, and yesterday I received a family notification stating that a member had been removed from the family group.

Because the account was active very recently, and because both the Microsoft sign-in system and Outlook mail system now appear unable to find it, I am trying to determine:

  1. Has the account been deleted, disabled, or renamed?
  2. Is there any way to investigate the status of the account when the recovery system reports that it does not exist?
  3. Is there a support escalation path for a Microsoft account that appears to have vanished rather than simply having a password problem?

I can provide screenshots of the family notification, the "account does not exist" message, and the mailbox unavailable error if that would help.

Thank you for any advice.

    Hi Tony,

Please note that our Microsoft Q&A forum is a public platform, and we will modify your response/ question to hide your personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue. I can certainly understand how alarming it would be to find that an account which was working normally very recently now appears unavailable.

Please note that this is a community forum. We do not have access to Microsoft account records or internal account systems, so we're unable to verify the status of an individual account or determine whether it has been deleted, renamed, disabled, or otherwise affected.

Given the circumstances, the recommended next step is to use the Help with the Microsoft account recovery form guidance from Microsoft Support, which explains the recovery process and available options for account recovery: Help with the Microsoft account recovery form

I realize this may not be the outcome you were hoping for, but the recovery process described in that article is the appropriate path for account-related issues of this nature.

Good luck, and I sincerely hope you're able to regain access to your account.
