(Windows 11) Can print test-page but print jobs are automatically deleting since last Windows Update

Since last updating Windows 11, I am unable to print from either Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, but I can print a test page from the printer settings. I am able to delete and add the printer as well, and again print a test page. I have followed procedures for clearing the print spool, starting and restarting the spool service, etc. The printer has a visible IP; I've tried installing the most recent (Canon) drivers, restarting the PC, restarting the printer, and all combinations. I am able to print from mobile devices (printer is wireless). Before the update, I had been able to print.

Very frustrating, disappointing experience with Windows.

    Hi Ted Ross Stock,

Have you had a chance to try the suggestions in the AI Answer? If you have, please let me know how it went and whether anything changed.

If the issue continues, open the page in Edge and press Ctrl + Shift + P to try printing through the Windows print dialog instead of the browser’s print preview.

Could you also share your Canon printer model, the Windows build shown by winver, the latest installed KB number and whether the selected printer port begins with WSD? That information may help identify what changed after the update.

I hope this helps us narrow it down.

Since the printer can print a Windows test page, the printer itself is reachable. The failure path is more likely the Windows print pipeline used by apps and browsers after the update.

Try this order, based on what has already been done:

    1. Test from a non-browser app
      • Print from Notepad, Word, or Excel.
      • If those apps also fail, the issue is not specific to Edge or Chrome.
      • If only browsers fail, restart the app and the PC, then test again.
    2. Update or reinstall the printer driver from Device Manager
      • Open Start > Device Manager.
      • Expand Printers.
      • Right-click the Canon printer and select Update driver.
      • If no update is available, select Uninstall device.
      • Restart the PC so Windows attempts to reinstall the printer driver automatically.
      • Risk note: removing the device temporarily makes the printer unavailable until Windows reinstalls it or it is added again.
    3. Check for conflicting or duplicate printer drivers
      • Open Start and search for Device Manager.
      • Expand Print queues or Printers.
      • Remove unnecessary, old, or duplicate printer drivers.
      • Then install the latest Canon driver.
      • This is important after a Windows update because conflicting drivers are a common cause of spooler crashes and failed jobs.
    4. Run the Windows printer troubleshooter
      • In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
      • Select the printer, then More devices and printer settings.
      • Right-click the printer and select Troubleshoot.
      • Follow the wizard.
      • On Windows 11, the automated troubleshooter in Get Help can also diagnose common printer problems.
    5. Re-add the printer using Windows detection
      • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
      • If the printer is listed, remove it.
      • Select Add a printer or scanner or Add device and let Windows detect it again.
      • After adding it back, print a test page and then test from Notepad before testing from Edge or Chrome.
    6. Install optional Windows driver updates
      • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
      • Install any available Optional updates related to drivers.
    7. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, roll back the printer driver
      • Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
      • Expand Printers or Print queues.
      • Right-click the printer and select Properties.
      • On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver if available.
      • Restart the PC.

Given the symptoms—test page works, mobile printing works, printer has an IP, and the issue began after a Windows update—the strongest next checks are:

    • test from Notepad to confirm whether this is browser-only,
    • remove duplicate/conflicting drivers in Device Manager,
    • reinstall or roll back the printer driver,
    • then run the Windows troubleshooter.
