If wired headphones are plugged into a PC port and no sound is coming through, check these in order:
- Make sure the plug is fully inserted.
- Check for a loose connection.
- If the PC has multiple 3.5 mm jacks, make sure the headphones are in the correct jack. On many systems, the output jack is green or labeled headphone.
- Check whether sound is muted or too low.
- Turn up Windows volume.
- Check app volume too, since some apps have separate volume controls.
- Test whether the port is the issue.
- If there is another headphone jack or USB port available, try that.
- Unplug the headphones and plug them in again.
- Check whether Windows detects the audio device.
- Open Start and type Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device appears, right-click it and select Enable device if that option is available.
- If it does not appear, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- In the Audio section, select Run.
- Turn off audio enhancements.
- Go to Start > Settings > Sound.
- In Output, select the audio device being used.
- Under Advanced settings, set Audio enhancements to Off.
- Restart the PC.
- Select Start > Power > Restart.
- After restart, check whether the headphones appear and play sound.
- If the headphones still do not appear, reinstall or update the audio driver.
- In Device Manager, check the audio device.
- If needed, install the latest audio driver from the PC or sound card manufacturer, then restart.
A wired headset plugged into a 3.5 mm jack may not always show up as a separate device name in Windows. On some PCs, Windows treats it as the same output device as the built-in speakers or sound card.
